A different look: a winter-time tour of the Refuge
Although the hardwood trees have shed their autumn splendor of colors, a winter-time visit to the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge offers a different look.
The Refuge, located approximately 10 miles north on U.S. 52 between Wadesboro and Ansonville, is a winter haven for migratory birds, wild turkies, bobwhite quail and white-tailed deer.
The best place to start a Refuge tour is at the headquarters area on U.S. 52. Visit the office or a nearby kiosk for information and/or brochures. There is a loop road, Wildlife Drive, that passes Sullivan Pond and winds along an unpaved country lane with the Sullivan Impoundment area on the right. Drive slowly -- very slowly -- and sneak upon beautiful egrets and herons fishing the waters, bucks and does in search of food, plus other waterfowl. There is a turnout after the impoundment area where a vehicle can be parked while taking a leisurely walk on a trail that returns to Sullivan Pond.
